The Haryana Civil Services (HCS) Examination is conducted by the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) for recruitment to prestigious administrative roles within the state government. The exam is held annually and is considered one of the most challenging state civil services exams in India, requiring thorough preparation and dedication.
The HCS exam consists of three stages designed to comprehensively assess the candidate’s capabilities:
Preliminary Examination (Objective Type):
Conducted on a single day in two shifts.
Two compulsory papers: General Studies-I and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).
Each paper lasts 2 hours with a 3-hour gap.
General Studies paper is scored to shortlist candidates; CSAT is qualifying with a minimum 33%.
Negative marking of 1/4th for incorrect answers.
Main Examination (Descriptive/Written):
Four papers, each 3 hours long:
Paper I: English (including essay) – 100 marks
Paper II: Hindi (including essay in Devanagari script) – 100 marks
Paper III: General Studies – 200 marks
Paper IV: Optional Subject – 200 marks
Interview/Personality Test:
Candidates thrice the number of available vacancies are shortlisted based on Mains scores.
Interview carries 75 marks assessing personality, communication, and suitability for civil services.
Final selection is based on combined marks of the Mains and Interview (total 675 marks).
The Preliminary Exam has two papers – General Studies and CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). It is primarily a screening test.
